I have been exhibiting at Art in the Pen for about 10 years. It is very well organised with a good standard of exhibitors and a strong customer base at Skipton. Although Thirsk doesn’t yet have as high a footfall I feel it has a lot of potential.

Our first exhibition at Art in the Pen Skipton this year and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Well organised and fabulous footfall. We will be back.

It’s a two day weekend event in August with the set up on the Friday followed by a preview evening. Stall price is reasonable for this, what you get is a an empty cattle pen for you to fit out. There are a few stalls that have electrics and a few grids if you want to raise the height of your stand for picture hanging, but these are sought after. The event is curated with an easy on-line application. It’s a really lovely fair, informal – it’s in cattle pens!! – but with a good (and loyal) customer base. There is a wide range of different makers/artists there (it’s not just for 2-D art). The organisation of the event is brilliant, Andy works hard to ensure it all runs smoothly.

Not too expensive to do and very well organised. A very friendly event.

We enjoyed doing the event but never saw any of the organisers at all. It would have been nice for someone to introduce themselves at some point over the weekend. I personally had a lovely light pen but I know a friend had an issue with a leaky roof which leaked all over her work.

One last consideration for next year.. could the cafe remain open for the preview as quite a few of us had nothing to eat at all. Either that or clearly state this in the exhibitors notes so we know to bring something with us. Thanks

I attended with my business Hanging by a Fred, absolutely loved this event, can’t wait for Craft in the Pen at Christmas. I’ll definitely be applying again.

It would’ve been nice to meet an organiser, to put faces to names etc but other than that no complaints.

Good show, good clientele. Cold and a bit gloomy at times, but that’s to do with the venue, not the organisation. Wonder if there could be somewhere for exhibitors to make their own drinks or something? Having to queue up for a coffee with the punters can be time consuming and frustrating if you’ve had to leave your stall empty.

Fantastic event that I’ve been doing for a good few years now. It is what it is space wise but it works well and if you are prepared for all weather eventualities and aware of the possibility of dripping water then you can usually get around all eventualities. Loading and unloading is relatively easy too. Andy the organiser is on site throughout the event with early and late finishes but is usually very busy making sure everything is working as it should so not everyone comes face to face with him. He moves at the speed of light but he is on the event floor constantly people probably just don’t realise they’ve seen him. My favourite event of the year and Crafts in the Pen is just as good but a lot colder!

Well organised event. As long as you accept the odd dripping water, the space is great.

I exhibited last year for the first time, loved it and have applied for this year. There were a lot of people visiting & buying & the standard of work was very high. Only drawback was the leaking roof & ridged concrete floor which is hard on the feet.

First time at Art In The Pen at Skipton but we normally exhibit at the Crafts In The Pen also at Skipton, so knew what to expect. Always very well organised, everything is taken care of for exhibitors including a fantastic brochure for every visitor with everyones details in which always helps for follow up orders. Andy and his team work hard to make these events a success and hopefully, I will be there with Salty Seas again next year!

A brilliant show, well organised and smooth running. I love the space that is given and the freedom it allows to really personalise the area. Loved seeing what everyone else had done with their pens they all looked wonderful. The visitors were lovely, and we had two brilliant days. Can’t wait to come back in November for Crafts in the Pen. Massive well done to Andy and his team who work like clockwork behind the scenes to make sure that everything works well. Loading and unloading was very easy.

Exhibited at the Pen for the first time last weekend after visiting for a few years. I loved it and found it very well organised. I can’t wait to show at the Craft in the Pen in November, although it will be very much colder.

Unfortunately we didn’t do very well this year and didn’t make our stall money back. We’re not sure why but there are a couple of things that we felt were worth mentioning. Firstly we’re not sure why it’s called art in the pen when such a lot of craft is on show; Crafts that are clearly made by hobbiests who can keep their prices low. This creates a problem for the serious artist who is trying to make a living.
Secondly I know of a few very talented artists who didn’t get in this year and looking around at a few of the stalls, which quite frankly were not of a great standard, I wondered why. What is the criteria for getting a stand?
Thirdly, I suspected that some of the goods on sale were ‘bought in’ and not made by the artist.
On a more personal level I think it would have been helpful if the cafe had stayed open longer on the Friday so stall holders could grab some tea before the preview.
My partner and I have decided not to apply next year and in fact are rethinking the whole art fair issue as the market seems to be getting totally saturated with similar events now; very often on the same weekend.

I was sad to see some of the comments on the above review. Many ‘craft’ makers have a degree in their chosen area and consider themselves professional artists and not ‘hobbyists’ and work to as high a standard both conceptually and by use of their making skills as any painter or sculptor and they work full-time in their chosen area of expertise. Art in the Pen has always accepted a good mix of artistic disciplines and I feel that this is appreciated by the customers. I agree that there may have been a few weaker stands this year but I think that would apply to painters as well as other areas of art and design and it must be very difficult for the selection panel to choose a good mix of people of the right standard, mixing new faces with the exhibitors who have shown previously. I really appreciated being chosen again and think that Andy and his team do a great job. It is difficult to make a reasonable return at any event in the current climate but I really feel that Andy and his team do their best to make it successful for as many people as possible and I do hope that Art in the Pen does not become as is suggested above a show just for painting and sculpture as this would diminish it’s appeal to the public. Personally as a ‘craft’ person I would not be able to exhibit at ‘Crafts in the Pen’ due to health reasons due to the cold at that time of year and really appreciated my place at ‘Art in the Pen’ at Skipton..

Art in the Pen is my favourite event of the year! I’ve exhibited here for 3 years and have always done well (we all have our different goals and objectives so what might be good for one of us, may not be for others). I particularly enjoy this event because of the kind and welcoming fellow exhibitors. The event organisation is brilliant and I’ve never had any issues. To be honest I’ve never had any issues with anything at Art in the Pen – obviously it can smell, uneven ground and tiolet queues but that’s all to be expected. I always recommend this event (it’s my favourite one afterall!) but I know some people don’t always sell well etc. I’ve heard that there may have been some grumpy “Artists” who exhibited this year – if you’re grumps, this probably isn’t the right event for you. But if you appreciate a wonderful variety of talented (and lovely) artists and makers, then I think you’ll enjoy it and I hope you meet your personal targets. Best wishes, Helen (the Perky Painter) x
