Their promotional blurb accurate. Good access for stall holders though the ‘shell scheme’ is pretty basic: stall spaces marked out with scaffolding, hung with basic market stall dividers. Which gave ample opportunity for old hands who went to town with the christmas decorations….

Good storage space within the marquees, parking close to for unloading/loading up, and a short distance away during the day.

Car park secure at night, some people even had camper vans.

Punters agreeable with good manners which is a change from those frequenting many events…

However, general opinion from fellow stall holders close by was that footfall was disappointing and tailed off considerably in the 3rd and 4th day. Takings were way below expectations.

Organisers ‘audition’ would-be stall holders, we were asked to drive to Cirencester for a 20minute chat.

Cost of stall surprisingly high: from £400 upwards + VAT – PLUS a ‘commission’ fee of 15% of your total takings….

Mary Howard is a charity fair – this year supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital. The organisers send out copious exhibitor instructions, Terms and Conditions, rules and regs about how to behave etc etc which happen also to be rather ambiguous about this ‘commission’ fee. You state your turnover to the organisers and get an invoice + VAT in return. Which I found curious – and confusing – as I had taken this ‘commission’ to be a contribution to the charity. Not clear even on careful re-reading of the T&Cs.

When I queried this: what the actual percentage of this ‘commission’ would be going to GOSH, who would be getting the Gift Aid forms and so on – the response was surprisingly defensive…..

    Would we apply again? No.

Would we recommend others? Only if they have high value items to sell which will cover the table price and ‘commission’ and give a decent return for the 4 days of selling.

Excellent show and brilliantly organised, well publicised and excellent loading and unloading. Love the scaffolding dividers which give great scope for decoration and make the whole thing feel different. Over the four days the money taken is excellent even on smaller goods. On the first day the customers definitely come to spend money and in large numbers but, obviously, there is a fall off towards the end of the week. The charity donation is going to be publicised at the beginning of the year when all the expenses etc have been worked out and I am sure there are a lot of those with the size of the marquees, parking staff, coaches etc etc. Well worth doing.

Good organisation in terms of instructions provided and communications. However, very expensive with fee of £ 450 plus as well as 15% commission so you need to be taking a lot – particularly if you are going to be also be staying in a local hotel. Footfall was less than I anticipated and not quite as well heeled as expected – lots of grannies not so many yummies – some with cash to spend others not so much, crowding out the £ 20 scarf stall. Would not do again.

A good and well organised fair and we did very well and have re-booked. I thought the attendance was good and the of the right demographics. Staff were very helpful and the whole thing was enjoyable. A breath of fresh air after Country Living which I will never attend again, but that’s another story!
